'Sandman' sinks his teeth into shark sculpture

Aug 28, 2014

There's been a shark sighting at Onset Beach!

Beachgoers don't need to worry about any attacks, though; this sandy shark will be washed away with the tide.

The 20-foot Great White was sculpted by Rodney Johnson, who is affectionately known as "Sandman" at Onset Beach. He said he makes sand sculptures purely for people's enjoyment.

"You come to the beach to be happy," Johnson said. "All I want to do is make people happy."

Johnson has been coming to Onset Beach from Brockton for almost a decade creating all different types of sand sculptures. He said he has over 40 designs.

While working on a sculpture a few days ago, Johnson said he was approached by 14-year-old Jason Leonard, who asked if he could help.

Johnson said Leonard caught on quick.  He quickly saw that Leonard was someone he could teach his craft to.

"Here's the man I need to take my place," Johnson said.

Leonard, who lives in Dedham, has been coming to Onset with his family for many summers. He worked with Johnson for about three hours on Thursday to create the shark.

"Him and I work together as a team," Johnson said.

"He's a really good teacher," said Leonard.
