Sandwich Road property to be cleaned up within the week
The Sandwich Road home destroyed by fire in January, 2011, leaving a pile of debris and neighbors wondering when the hazard would be cleaned, should finally be cleared within the week.
Myles Burke, Director of Inspectional Services, updated the Board of Selectmen on the status of the property, located at 118 Sandwich Road, on Tuesday.
The owner of the home was injured in the fire. His family members had been cleaning the property, but told town officials on several occasions that they didn't have the monetary means to finish the job.
During a hearing on the property in December, the Board of Selectmen gave the family until January to remove any sentimental items from the debris.
A committee consisting of a fire chief, a surveyor, and a local "disinterested party" formed on May 30 to determine the state of the property and whether the town could legally clean it up, Burke said.
The committee determined that the town could clean it up because there was garbage and debris on the site exposed to the weather, because there was a stack of wood leaning on the fence next to a neighboring property that was a fire hazard, and because the foundation to the house was open to the environment and presented a hazard to the public.
The clean-up of the property started on Monday, but was temporarily halted on Tuesday due to concerns surrounding a pile of asbestos tiles on the property, Burke said.
After everything is cleared, the foundation of the home will be filled with inorganic matter, Burke said.
