School Committee appoints administrator of special education

Aug 22, 2013

The School Committee on Wednesday appointed an administrator of special education for Wareham Public Schools.

Dr. Sue Anne Marks, a Wareham resident, received her doctorate of education from Northeastern University and received her master's degree in special education from Simmons College.

School Committee member Geoff Swett, who was part of the selection committee that recommended Marks for the position, called her "outstanding."

In addition to overseeing special education, the administrator of special education deals with English-learner education, the education of homeless students, community partnerships, preschool services, guidance, and other areas.

Marks will be paid a salary of $104,000. She replaces Robert Louzan, who retired earlier this year. Louzan was paid $120,000 per year.

The School Committee approved the appointment 3-0-0. Chair Rhonda Veugen and member Cliff Sylvia were absent.

Marks thanked the district for the opportunity, saying: "I'm so happy to be here."

Marks spent nearly five years working for New Bedford Public Schools as its director of health, guidance, and pupil personnel services, where she designed and directed special education services in 25 schools and oversaw a $5.5 million budget.

Marks has also worked as an adjunct instructor at Roger Williams University and supervised early childhood education for New Bedford Public Schools. She taught special education for seven years in West Bridgewater Public Schools.
