School Committee approves additions to District Handbook and high school code of conduct
Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino presented an updated version of the District Handbook and Wareham High School Code of Conduct to the School Committee Wednesday night.
Among the changes within the handbook was the allowance of skateboards in school, because, Palladino said, “they seem to be getting longer and skinnier, so they can fit in lockers,” and because they are the primary mode of transportation for some students.
“For about five or six [students] every afternoon, it is,” Palladino remarked.
Palladino also said the school added new rules regarding e-cigarettes, or “vapes”, which are a kind of vapor-only cigarette.
“This is something new that we’re seeing amongst teenagers,” Palladino said. “We had one issue this year with that.”
Other changes included new restrictions on students leaving the cafeteria, as well as including mobile phones as learning technology, and requiring student IDs to scan in and out of school. Backpacks are still disallowed in bathrooms.
Committee Chairman Geoff Swett raised concern over the wording of the handbook, saying that it “reminds me of the tax code.”
Swett asked new Committee student representative, junior Noah Wambolt, how often he actually uses the handbook.
“I think we give it a good glance over at the beginning of the year, when we first get it, but throughout the year, it’s not something we go back to,” Wambolt replied.
Swett has said before that he believes the handbook needs to come with a colloquial version of the text, as he believes the handbook's language to be murky and inaccessible.
