School Committee member donates funds to fix high school tennis court

Aug 22, 2013

School Committee member Geoff Swett is donating as much as $3,500 to repair the cracks in Wareham High School's tennis court.

It's a need that few others would notice as much as the tennis players and, well, Swett himself -- he's the girls' tennis coach.

Swett wrote in a letter to Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino that the cracks were last repaired and the surface repainted in 2006, but since then, "despite the high quality work done" by East Coast Sealcoating, "new cracks have developed in different areas."

Swett received a bid from East Coast Sealcoating for the repairs at a cost of $3,500. He noted that he applied to the United States Tennis Association for monetary assistance, and the association could provide as much as $700. Swett said he would then donate the remainder of the cost.

"Failure to repair [the cracks] now will just raise the cost later and increase the likelihood that play will be impacted by bad bounces and injuries will occur from feet getting caught in the cracks," Swett advised. "I recognize the town and school finances do not allow for the $3,500 to come from the [fiscal year 2014] budget. For that reason, I am asking you to approve a donation from myself for up to $3,500 to allow the repairs to occur now."

The School Committee approved the donation, as it must for all donated items and services, on Wednesday.

"Does Mrs. Swett know about this?" School Committee member Kenneth Fontes joked.

Swett assured him: She does.

"I'm speechless. This is an absolutely outstanding gesture by Mr. Swett," Fontes said, noting that Swett has been teaching members of the Boys & Girls Club how to play the sport. Fontes is the director of the Club.

"Thank you very much, and I'm sure the tennis team thanks you very much," said School Committee member Mike Flaherty. "We've got some great people in the community."

Swett responded: "We've got some great kids in this town."

Because he serves on the School Committee, Swett does not accept a salary for the coaching gig. He has coached the girls' team since 2005.
