School officials seek solutions to construction disruption

Wareham District School officials want to avoid disrupting classes at the John W. Decas Elementary School while a roof repair project is underway. However, a solution has proven elusive so far.

“We are working diligently to get the roof fixed as soon as possible knowing that we need to minimize the disruption of the day-to-day for our students and teachers,” said Business Manager Michael MacMillan. “A plan has not been developed yet.”

He provided a project update to members of the School Committee on Wednesday night. A vote at Spring Town Meeting authorized officials to borrow up to $2.4 million to repair a section of the roof and replace antiquated boilers at the school. Both the roof and boilers are nearing 50 years old.

Up to 70 percent of those funds will be reimbursed by the state.

MacMillan said the age of the roof has delayed the project because replacement parts are no longer manufactured.

Also, officials are considering where to house students while the section of roof over their individual classrooms is under repair.

Committee member Cliff Sylvia floated the idea of putting students in the high school while work is being done. Work over individual classrooms is estimated to take two weeks, said MacMillan.

Committee Chair Melvin Lazarus said the matter would be revisited when more information is available.
