Schools provide a flag for every veteran

It took less than two days for residents to donate more than $500 to Wareham schools to honor the town's veterans this upcoming Veterans Day.

Wareham Schools Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood said she met with the Veterans Day Committee in early September to devise a way to commemorate the town's veterans.

The committee told her there were 1,800 veterans from Wareham, which gave her the idea to buy 1,800 small American flags.

"I thought wouldn't it be pretty cool to line Viking Drive with flags and put flags in front of our schools?" said Shaver-Hood.

After looking into pricing online, she came up with $550 as the amount of money that needed to be raised.

With the help of District/Technology Outreach Coordinator Jaime Rebhan, Shaver-Hood created an online fundraiser through the crowd-funding website gofundme. The fundraiser went online Thursday, Sept. 11.

"By Saturday morning (Sept. 13) around 9 a.m. we surpassed our goal," said Shaver-Hood.

All 1,800 flags have been ordered and come Veterans Day the flags will cover the length of Viking Drive.

"Thank you to the community for helping. It speaks to your passion and how supportive you are," Shaver-Hood said.
