Scout plans to build boxes for retired flags
Prospective Eagle Scout Dan Carneiro received a round of applause at Tuesday night's Selectmen's meeting after announcing his Eagle Scout project to help dispose of worn and tattered U.S. flags in town.
Fittingly, two weeks after Veterans Day, Carneiro said he plans to create a number of flag retirement boxes to be put around town. He said after learning that flags are routinely disposed of in landfills he wanted to find a way that residents could drop off flags so they could be properly retired.
Carneiro, a member of Troop 39, said he plans to create four wooden drop-off boxes and place them at the Police Station, Town Hall, the Onset VFW and the Centre Cemetery. The project would come at no cost to the Town, being completely funded by Carneiro and the donations he receives. He said the boxes would be two feet by four feet with a message on top explaining the box's purpose.
Selectman Alan Slavin suggested adding the Onset and Wareham Fire Departments to his list. Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, who was present at the meeting, suggested the Harbormaster's Office as a possible location, since that is where residents obtain dump stickers.
"Whatever we can do as a board we'll do for you," Slavin said.
Selectman Judith Whiteside noted that only seven percent of Boy Scouts nationwide ever make it to the rank of Eagle Scout.
