Selectmen approve liquor license, conservation restrictions
Selectmen tackled a varied agenda Tuesday night, making decisions on conservation restrictions and liquor licenses while getting updates on a traveling tribute to Vietnam War veterans. See below for more information.
Onset Blues Festival - liquor license
The Onset Bay Association was granted a one-day liquor license for the Onset Blues Festival set for Aug. 6 at the Lillian Gregerman Band Shell in Prospect Park. Selectmen had some concerns before unanimously granting the license, a first for the annual event.
Association President Kat Jones told the board steps were taken to ensure there would no trouble at the performance. She spoke with neighboring businesses, making sure they didn't mind alcohol would be sold. There are plans to keep the alcohol contained in a fence around the trailer that will be serving it. The association will only sell alcohol between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be two detail officers on site the day of the festival, Jones said.
Wickets Island conservation restrictions
Selectmen also approved the Buzzards Bay Coalition's request to place conservation restrictions on Wickets Island.
The coalition purchased and acquired the island on June 30 with a state grant that required the issuance of a conservation restriction. These restrictions allow passive recreational use of the island, noncommercial shellfishing and vegetation management.
During the meeting, Mark Rasmussen, president of the Coalition, and Allen Decker, director of land protection, said that Wickets Island is open to the public, but said not all sections of the island are safe. They encouraged people to stay off the island until next season.
Moving Wall update
The Wareham Veteran's Council reported an update on their efforts to bring the Moving Wall, a half size replica of the Vietnam Memorial, to Wareham next year. It will be on display at the Wareham High School track.
The council is seeking volunteers as the date approaches, and anyone interested could contact any of the members of the council. The next Veterans Council meeting is on July 21 in the Multi-Service Center on 48 Marion Road, in the basement cafeteria.
More to come
Chair Judith Whiteside announced that there will soon be a form to file complaints of "nasty looking places" in the town. The form will be online and available to the public by the next Selectmen meeting.
Selectmen will also discuss liquor licenses in depth and establish ground rules for issuing them at a future meeting. Additionally, the board will work on updating the junk bylaw application.
