The Board of Selectmen appointed Judith Whiteside to the Road Commission and interviewed three people for the Police Building Study Committee during its Tuesday meeting.

Five Police Building Study Committee positions became available following voters' approval to spend $165,000 toward building a new Public Safety Complex at Town Meeting last Monday. 

The complex will be home to the Police Department, and Wareham Emergency Medical Services, and could also host other departments. 

Town Moderator Claire Smith who served on two feasibility committees in the past was one of the applicants.

“When you have any kind of public construction it is a very specific process and it has to be followed. I think I can be very helpful, bring some information and save some time and energy and hopefully get this going,” said Smith. 

Although Selectmen will interview more people next Tuesday, Selectman Chair Patrick Tropeano said Smith deserves to “see the building be finished at some point.”

“Hopefully, this is the time,” said Tropeano.

Resident Paul Girard and Vice Chairman of the Wareham Finance Committee David Heard applied for the committee as well. 

“Five years ago I went to a police station and I had no idea that building was as small as it was. We need a good police department, we are not treating them well,” said Girard.  “I would like to be a part of getting a good station in this town.”

Heard also commented on his decision to apply for a spot on the committee. 

“I hope I have the opportunity to serve the Police Building Committee. I think my background is good for it. I am a registered engineer, I worked as a project manager on construction projects for years,” said Heard. “This town deserves a good police station.”

Tropeano noted that if Heard were to join the Police Building Commission he would have to leave the Finance Committee, a requirement Heard was aware of and willing to comply with.
