Selectmen recognize hard work of local groups
Three local organizations were awarded certificates of recognition from the Wareham Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night. Selectman Peter Teitelbaum read each award as it was presented, thanking the organizations for their service to Wareham now and in the future.
The Wareham Historical Society was the first to be recognized. President Angela Dunham, Vice President Mary Hull and Treasurer Sandy Slavin all attended the meeting. The Historical Society maintains five different historical properties, including the Kendrick Museum and Fearing Tavern. Teitelbaum thanked the group for fostering the town’s understanding of Wareham’s place in history.
The Wareham Garden Club was commended for its efforts to beautify the town. President Mary Bruce and Vice Presidents Peter LaBouliere and Barbara Van Inwegen attended the meeting. The club promotes gardening, assists in conservation efforts and provides scholarships for Wareham High School students interested in pursuing botany or agriculture in college.
The Selectmen also recognized Don’t Trash Wareham, a local group originally founded by five residents who were fed up with seeing trash throughout town. The group has sponsored several town clean-ups and worked to educate students on waste and trash pickup.
“Thank you for giving up your time to pick up trash that others have carelessly and illegally discarded,” Judith Whiteside told group members Mary Bruce and Nora Bicki.
