Sewage leak prompts shellfish closure in Wareham

Nov 25, 2018

Wareham officials announced a raw sewage leak on Sunday morning has temporarily closed shellfishing in parts of town.

Wareham Department of Natural Resources officials say shellfishing in the Wareham and Weweantic Rivers has been suspended immediately following the leak. Authorities say harvesting in those areas will reopen when water quality tests show bacteria levels are normal.

Wareham Water Pollution Control Facility Director Guy Campinha said the leak was discovered at 9:30 a.m. in the Smith Avenue pump station, located at 5 Smith Ave. in the Swifts Beach neighborhood.

The leak was controlled at 11:30 a.m. and repairs are slated to start Monday midday, said Campinha. He noted the station suffered a forced main break. It’s unclear how much sewage leaked into a nearby storm drain, which discharges into Buzzards Bay, said Campinha.

“We were fortunate to get it under control as quickly as we did,” said Campinha. “Our fear is that because the station is surrounded by water we’re unsure how much contamination leaked into the area…This is a big precautionary measure.”

Testing by the Division of Marine Fisheries is slated to start early this week, according to officials.
