Softball, girls tennis earn playoff berths

May 29, 2024

The softball and girls tennis teams for Wareham High School are moving on into the postseason after successful regular season runs.

Athletic Director Edward Rodrigues said both teams “had a great season” and won their conferences. “Hopefully they can do well in the tournament,” he said.

The girls tennis team ended the regular season with a 15 and 2 record, and are ranked 18th in Division 3. It includes seniors Brooklyn Bindas, Stoney Ferry, Julia McDuffy and Keira Pierre, who said goodbye to the team in a senior night match Tuesday, May 21.

Head Coach Geoff Swett said the team is currently in a “rebuilding” period, despite their good record. He said he doesn’t believe that the team will win the state championship, but believes that they might win one or two playoff rounds, and will see what happens after that.

The team’s first game will be against North Reading High School on Friday, May 31 at 4:30 p.m.

The softball team closed out the regular season in 20th position in Division 5 with a 16 and 4 record. Four of its players — Jossalyn Anctil, Jolee Anderson, Olivia Lacava and Madison Nereu — have been chosen for the Mayflower Conference All-Star Team.

“It will be a good challenge for us, the state tournament,” said Head Coach Rudy Cadena. It has been “a great season for our girls,” Cadena added. “They worked hard and they deserved it.”

The team’s first opponent is McCann Technical School; this game will be played at a date and time to be determined.

While the Wareham High School Baseball Team did not make the postseason, it has achieved a significantly better record than it has in previous years, ending the regular season at eight and 12.

Head Coach Chris Cabe attributes this year’s success in part to the school’s switch from the South Coast Conference to the Mayflower Athletic Conference, where the competition is “not as tough,” he said. Additionally, he said, “This year, the energy with the kids is better than it was last year.”

The boy’s tennis team earned four wins throughout the regular season and picked up 14 losses. Coming off a winless season in 2023, Head Coach Evan Wilga looked for students to continue to work on their own game and feel good about their work, he said.
