Special Town Meeting to be held on May 21
During a nearly three hour Election Day meeting, the Board of Selectmen Tuesday agreed to schedule a special Town Meeting on May 21, which officials said is necessary so voters can approve changes to union contracts.
It is unclear which of the town's unresolved union contracts will be on the docket, though the "Joint Labor Management Commission" and the Wareham Police Union were discussed Tuesday.
The warrant for the upcoming April 23 regular spring Town Meeting has already closed. Selectman Steve Holmes asked whether the new articles could somehow be inserted onto that warrant so town would not have to spend money on a special Town Meeting, but town attorney Richard Bowen replied that it could not be done.
Bowen added that with the high number of articles on the agenda for the spring Town Meeting (there are 51), "it is entirely possible that the Town Meeting will be in session until" the end of May, when the special Town Meeting will convene.
