A splash of talent from Middle School artists
Patrons of the Wareham Free Library may find their visits a little more colorful than usual, as art from Wareham Middle School students will hang on the library’s walls from May 14 to 31.
Over 100 pieces of art are included in the gallery, which is titled, “Sweets and Treats.”
Elias Rapoza, a 13-year-old student in sixth grade, contributed a black-and-white sketch of a bird with a tree pictured in its chest.
“I usually draw things like this,” said Rapoza, who expressed an avid interest in horror. “I wanted to put the tree in the bird, I think that way it would make it look like it was reflecting.”
Jeighon MacLeod had a decidedly more colorful image of cupcakes on display.
“We were assigned just a couple of cupcakes to draw,” said MacLeod, who is 12 and in the sixth grade. “I just wanted to multiply them, just color them vibrant colors [and] add a horizon type of thing.”
MacLeod also added a touch of texture with pencils. Despite the detail in his artistic process, he said “I’m not into art — I think I’m just good at it.”
Andrea Ericson, Unified Arts Department Chair with Wareham Public Schools, said most of the projects were based on the work of famous artists.
“So the cupcakes are… inspired by the artist Wayne Thiebaud, and the birds are inspired by Charlie Harper,” she said.
The District arranged the gallery in the Library as part as an effort to get kids’ art out in the community, following up on an exhibition at the Blue Foot Cafe in February.
Middle School art teacher Cynthia Gedraitis and Ericson “just came over one day, and said, ‘Can we do an art show?’, and they were like, ‘Absolutely, we’re happy you asked,’ and within like a month and a half, we had stuff hanging,” said Ericson.
