Spring sports start up
Spring is in the air at the Wareham High School athletic department. Volleyball, tennis, baseball, and softball teams have all taken to their fields and courts. Here some of the coaches share their thoughts on the spring season.
Baseball
Coach David Harrison is optimistic about the Boys Varsity Baseball team this season. “We’re getting better, that's for sure... We have a good nucleus,” he said.
The team has six returning players this season, several that are capable of playing multiple positions.
“Getting to the tournament is a reasonable goal,” Harrison said.
The team plays Middleborough High School on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Middleboro.
Softball
Expect to see a lot of fresh faces on the Varsity Girls Softball team. Coach Cindy Sylvia said there is a good mix of students on the team this year. “The veteran players will bring leadership to the field,” she explained.
Sylvia said the team’s offense is solid, but the girls will need to work on its defense. One thing the team is not lacking: “heart.”
“There is never a time the kids don’t come to play,” she continued. “We have a simple goal: Be better tomorrow than today.”
The team next plays Sandwich High School on Tuesday, April 5, at 4 p.m. in Sandwich.
Boys Tennis
The Varsity Boys Tennis team is in need of one more player. Currently only six members have signed up, forcing the team to forfeit at least one of the five matches played during each competition.
"We are one match down before we even start. It's tough," said Coach David Robertson. "That will be a handicap."
The team is scheduled to play Middleborough High School on Wednesday, April 6, in Wareham at 3:30 p.m., regardless of if it finds a seventh player.
Girls Tennis
Varsity Girls Tennis Coach Geoff Swett said winning is not expected from the team. "We have fun,” he said. “The girls learn a sport they can play for the rest of their lives.”
Of the 12 members on the team most are returning players. “Once they start, they rarely quit,” Swett added.
The girls play Middleborough High School on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m. in Middleborough.
