State grant bolsters Evergreen House work
A state grant of $60,500 will help Evergreen House, a sober living facility, help make upgrades, Peter McCarthy, executive director of Evergreen House Inc., said.
The award will support ongoing renovations, including new windows, doors, roof and interior upgrades, he said.
The home, located at 2875 Cranberry Highway, serves men dealing with alcohol and substance addictions, he said. There are currently 14 men living at the facility. The facility takes referrals from the Veterans Administration and often has veterans at the house, he said.
The men receive social services and case management and are “encouraged and aided in finding employment,’’ McCarthy said. A house manager is on site at all times, McCarthy noted, and two licensed addiction and drug counselors are on staff.
The house receives referrals from detox programs, treatment facilities and the court system. The staff does a “thorough screening’’ of these men, whose legal issues relate in some way to substance abuse, McCarthy stressed. Certain individuals , including sex offenders and arsonists, are disqualified, he said.
The Evergreen House funding is part of a $925,000Community Development Block Grant awarded to Wareham from the state. Awards will be used to support housing rehabilitation and provide social services in a variety of areas, including youth services, food pantry support, transportation assistance and homelessness prevention.
Specific award amounts and details were not available.
