Steven Sumner, 69

Steven R. Sumner, 69, of Carver, died Jan. 2 in Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Plymouth. He was the husband of Sandra L. (Snell) Sumner and the son of the late William W. and Carol M. (Hebert) Sumner.

He was born in New Bedford and lived in Lakeville for many years before moving to Carver in 1977.  He graduated from Apponoquet High School in Lakeville. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Sumner worked as a tool and die maker for EMS in Attleboro for many years before retiring.  Previously he worked for Texas Instruments.

He enjoyed bowling, vacationing in Aruba, fishing and collecting tools. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. (Snell) Sumner; three sons, Gregory Gonsalves of Kingston, David Gonsalves of Wareham and Scott Gonsalves of Middleboro; a daughter, Theresa Brown of West Wareham; two brothers, Wayne Sumner of Middleboro and Mark Sumner of Lakeville; a grandson, Zachary Gonsalves; two granddaughters, Kassandra Peterson and Desirae Gonsalves; two goddaughters who affectionately called him “Big Buddy,” Amy Bernado and her daughters, Olivia and Lauren Bernado of Acushnet and Meghan Kelley of Freetown, a nephew, Nickolas Sumner of West Bridgewater; three nieces, Amy Sumner of West Bridgewater, Lindsay Sumner of New York and Molly LaForester of central MA.

Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
