Student poets earn first place in state competition

Feb 11, 2016

The poems of four Wareham students earned first place in a statewide competition, School Committee members learned on Wednesday night.

Wareham Garden Club President Cheryl Ikasalo and Publicity Chair Dianne Murphy informed the committee that 183 students from across the district submitted poems.

Of those submissions, four students earned first place in their grade level, beating out kids from across Massachusetts.

“It’s just incredible,” said Murphy. “They’re so creative.”

Murphy said the poems will now compete against submissions from across the country.

“Wouldn’t it just be wonderful if one of our students from Wareham won on the national level?” she said.

The winners are: Katelyn Trask (sixth grade), Emma Sylvia (third grade), McKenna Duggan (second grade) and Emily Roberge (seventh grade).
