Students decorate Agawam, St. Patrick's, and Centre Cemeteries

The honor of decorating the gravestones of veterans was tasked to 40 students from Wareham Middle School, and according to a veteran, they did it well.

John McGonnell was impressed by the way students conducted themselves on the cemetery grounds.

“They absolutely did a great job,” he said.

The students kept themselves in check, reminding each other not to run across the cemetery. They worked in teams and helped each other, while respectfully placing the flags in their holders.

Flag markers were placed on the gravestones of veterans days prior to the flag decorating by Tyler Litchfield, a JROTC representative on the Wareham Veterans Council. There were several versions of the holders; some Vietnam, World War I and World War II markers. Others simply read “veterans.”

The event was organized by teacher Jessica Andrews, who has kept the tradition going for several years. She accompanied 20 students at Agawam Cemetery in Onset. The rest were brought to Centre Cemetery and St. Patrick’s Cemetery adjacent to it.

After the decorating, the students went on a field trip to Onset Beach and were treated to lunch at Marc Antony’s restaurant as a “thanks” from their teachers.
