Students were given the opportunity to see with sound on Tuesday morning, when they attended a presentation on sonar from a member of Edgetech, a global underwater technology company based out of the West Wareham industrial park.

Edgetech builds sonar equipment systems that can see on the bottom of the ocean floor.

“It’s the only thing you can use to see down there,” said James Feliciano Jr., a product engineer with Edgetech.

Feliciano delivered a presentation to a group of a dozen students from grades five through eight in the CARE program, which stands for Community, Academic, Recreation and Enrichment and is in it’s 12th year in operation at Wareham schools.

Feliciano said Edgetech equipment is used all over the world, including the search for Malaysian Airlines 370 flight that was lost over the waters of the Indian Ocean in March.

He said the equipment has many different uses, from keeping track of pipelines to search and rescue efforts by law enforcement and fire departments.

During his presentation, Feliciano showed students how different images taken with sonar look from normal pictures.

“They were great, they were really engaged,” Feliciano said of the students. He also said the students will be coming to Edgetech’s facility later in the summer to get an inside look at how the equipment is made.
