Students have smashing good time at game tournament
An after school video game tournament didn’t earn sixth graders any extra credit on Wednesday night, but bragging rights were on the line.
Hosted by the school’s Parent Teacher Association, the tournament had 18 players who faced off against each other in groups of three. Students played Super Smash Bros., a game that pits different video game characters against each other in multi-player battles.
“We do a lot of charitable events throughout the year as a PTA,” said Donna Lambert, one the event’s organizers. “This is just for the kids to get together and have a really fun time.”
This year was the second annual tournament held at the school and was the first time it was broken down into separate grades. Last year, the tournament featured 48 kids from all middle school grades playing on the same night. Due to its popularity, students in the same grade levels competed against each other to accommodate more players on different nights.
“We have twice as many sixth graders playing this year,” said Lambert.
With fellow classmates cheering from the audience, the night took on a festive, competitive atmosphere.
Students played for cash prizes, said Lambert, adding that the first place won $40, second $25 and third $15.
All in all, it wasn’t a bad way to spend a school night.
