Students place finishing touches on track for Moving Wall arrival
Wareham students planted flags and cleaned up the Andersson Track on Wednesday to ensure it would be ready for the Vietnam Moving Wall’s arrival Thursday.
On Wednesday afternoon, members of Wareham High School’s DECA Club and students in the CARE program completed tasks to spiff up the field. The DECA members watered plants, dug trenches for wiring and cleaned big wooden ribbons representing different groups of veterans. The club members will also help with cleanup when the wall is taken down.
“It’s going to be so cool,” said DECA President Tyler Litchfield. “This is a big deal for the town.”
CARE program eighth graders arranged thousands of flags around the perimeter of the track to surround the Moving Wall.
“You are the capstone of this effort,” Moving Wall Planning Committee Director Matthew Stanton told them. “You are the ones that are going to finish this off.”
Stanton told the students to take care that the flags did not touch the ground to show respect.
“This is emotional,” said Madelyn Bowman, 14, as she put a flag into the ground. “Looking around, seeing everyone who cares and why it’s so important that we’re here.”
Wareham High School teacher Jeff Taber said the CARE students saw it as a privilege to help prepare for the Moving Wall.
“They worked hard all summer so they could do this,” Taber said. “This is a good thing for them to see and learn.”
