Students, teachers look for help funding Sweden trip

Jan 16, 2015

Some students from Wareham are looking to travel to Sweden in 2016, but could use some help getting there.

A Global Student Summit will be held in Sweden in April of 2016, but the cost of the global summit and travel are significant. Students and teachers involved in the Global Education Team at Wareham High School and Middle School are invited to take the trip, and they've started a fundraising campaign to help with the costs.

Prior to the trip, students will also be involved in a "Sweden Sister Schools Project," which partners Wareham students with a K-8 school in Asaka, Sweden and a high school in the neighboring town of Trollhatten, Sweden. High school students and teachers will participate in "dual enrollment" in a class in the Trollhatten school for one class period/week during fall 2015. Global Education Team teachers at Wareham High will likewise have Swedish students virtually enrolled in one of their classes. The team will have monthly Skype staff meetings with Swedish counterparts to discuss best practices in education and share ideas, lesson plans and projects. Students will meet monthly as well, via Skype, and their meetings will focus on developing the best solution to a student generated concern, issue or problem.

Students will travel to Sweden with teacher leaders on April 15, 2016. Teachers will shadow their Swedish peers for a day and then teach both Wareham and Swedish students the following day. Students will also shadow students and work together to present a clear and compelling strategy for the solution to their chosen issue during a global student summit to be held during the visit.

The team is asking for donations through a GoFundMe page, which can be accessed at http://www.gofundme.com/k8xtok.
