Summer program provides free meals for kids

Jun 8, 2010

School may be out soon, but lunch will still be in session. The Summer Lunch Program will be making stops in two neighborhoods this summer, providing free meals to children ages 18 and under.

"Even if you pay for your [school] lunch all year long, it's free at these sites during the summer," said Debbie Perry, Wareham Public Schools Food Service Manager.

The program, now in its third year, serves meals Monday through Friday beginning on June 28 until August 27. Lunch is available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Wareham High School, a new location for the program this year. Lunches will also be served from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Onset Band Shell. Additionally, free snacks are available at the Gleason Family YMCA from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

"I know it's been a tough year for parents losing jobs, and I don't like to see anybody not be able to eat, especially kids," Perry said.

The Summer Lunch Program is a collaboration of Wareham Public Schools, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Project Bread. It receives state and federal funding for supplies.

Meals must be eaten on-site. The menu, which is tweaked yearly, includes sandwiches, hot dogs, meatball subs, stuffed-crust pizza and, a favorite among students, chicken Caesar wraps.

"The kids pretty much dictate what we serve," Perry said. "We want to make sure that there are things that they like so that they'll continue to come back."

And, Perry said, peanut-butter-and-jelly and peanut-butter-and-fluff sandwiches are always available.

Side dishes include fruit, vegetables, chips, and treats such as cookies and Italian ice. Perry said she tries to keep the menu well-rounded and is working to get a wider variety of fruits to serve.

The program provided meals to approximately 80 children per day last year, which was an increase from 40 per day the year before, Perry said. Her goal for this year?

"As many as can come," Perry said.
