Superintendent says protocol was followed in school bus accident

Wareham Police responded to an accident involving a school bus in the area of Wareham Middle School at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Friday, January 27.

"There were no injuries reported to the sergeant at the scene," said Wareham Police Lieutenant Kevin Walsh.

The bus was transporting John W. Decas Elementary School students.

Walsh said that the department's preliminary investigation indicated that the school bus was stopped on Viking Drive and the vehicle in front of it "backed into it from a very short distance."

A previous version of this story said the school bus was parked. It was not moving, but was not parked, Walsh clarified.

The vehicle "hit the bumper of the school bus," Walsh said.

In a statement sent home to parents on January 30, Superintendent Dr. Barry Rabinovitch said the "School Bus Accident Procedure was followed by all involved."

The bus driver notified the school transportation department. Police were called and "arrived quickly to the site," Rabinovitch wrote.

"When Wareham Police arrived, they inspected the vehicles and spoke with the drivers of both vehicles involved, including the bus driver," Rabinovitch wrote. "After finding that no damage was done and hearing from the driver that all children were 'OK,' the police cleared the [bus] to continue on its route."

After the police left, but before the students who were being dropped off at the Boys & Girls Club were able to enter the building, Decas Elementary Principal Christine Panarese "boarded the bus to check on the children," Rabinovitch wrote.

After the incident, Panarese and a Decas Elementary secretary "called all parents of the children on the bus to explain what had happened," according to Rabinovitch.

"It is easy to second guess any incident that occurs," Rabinovitch said. "It is my opinion that the Decas School administration, transportation staff, and Wareham Police followed protocol and did what they thought was correct."

Rabinovitch added that he plans to review the school district's accident procedure with administrators and Wareham Police.

No citations were issued and no one was arrested in the incident, Walsh said.
