Suspect attempts to run from police and hits telephone pole
A police chase ended with a suspect hitting a telephone pole near the British Landing Condominiums just before midnight on Thursday, Jan. 10.
Christopher Holmes, 31, of Fall River, was reportedly parked at the Mill Pond Station package store at approximately 11:45 p.m., when the store was closed, when Wareham Police Officer James White approached the car, according to police.
As White entered the parking lot, "the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed, and traveled toward Main Street," police said.
White gave chase, but reported losing sight of the fast-moving vehicle at some point before it hit a telephone pole near the corner of Main Street and Warr Avenue, and flipped onto its side, according to police.
Police said that Holmes took off running as White approached the disabled vehicle, but White quickly caught him and placed him under arrest.
Holmes reportedly admitted that he'd been drinking, and said he had stolen the car from a family member. The car had not been reported stolen at that point, according to police.
At the scene, police were notified that Holmes has a suspended license and an outstanding warrant with New Bedford District Court.
Holmes was taken to Tobey Hospital by Wareham EMS to be treated for minor injuries, and was then released back into the custody of the police.
Holmes is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, use of a motor vehicle without authority, and operating with a suspended driver's license.
A woman who lives in a nearby house, but declined to have her name published, said she heard the crash before she saw it.
“It was just unbelievable," she said. "I heard this huge noise and [saw] the cop cars coming down.”
She said she then saw Holmes run from the vehicle.
“It was obvious he was trying to flee,” she said, adding, “The cops got him. They handcuffed him, and the ambulance was there.”
