Suspects in Longwood Ave. shooting plead 'not guilty' to charges
Five Wareham residents arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred on Friday night in front of Shell Point Apartments on Longwood Avenue in Onset appeared in Wareham 4th District Court on Monday. All pleaded "not guilty" to the separate charges against them.
Dominic Rezendes, who is currently homeless but formerly lived in Wareham, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, after he allegedly shot East Falmouth resident Matthew Joy after an altercation. It is currently unclear what caused the disagreement.
Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Davidson argued that Rezendes' bail should be set at $500,000, calling the 20-year-old a "very significant flight risk."
Judge Thomas Kirkman set bail at $50,000, however, for the charges. Rezendes is also held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail for new assault and battery and intimidating a witness charges, after he allegedly spit on a probation officer and threatened to kill her before his appearance in court Monday.
Four individuals accused with being accessories to the crime after the fact also pleaded "not guilty" to their charges. Those individuals are: Ryan LaChance, 20, of 24 Terry Lane East, Jerae Black, 21, of 17 Camardo Drive, Corissa Jones, 19, of 36 Swifts Beach Road, and Lynden Mendes, 17, of 15 Oakdale Heights Lane.
Black was released on $1,000 cash bail, while Jones and Mendes were each released on $500 cash bail.
LaChance was also charged with carrying chemical mace without a Firearms Identification Card. He is held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.
Police responded to reports of gunshots in front of the 56 Longwood Avenue apartments at around 10 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, witnesses told them that two men were fighting outside and one of them pulled out a handgun.
Joy was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the foot. He was being treated by Wareham EMS in one of the apartments in the building when police arrived. He was rushed to Tobey Hospital and then airlifted to a hospital in Boston where he underwent surgery for his injuries, according to police. He is currently being treated in intensive care and is in stable condition, police said.
Officers were conducting surveillance of the apartment complex throughout the day Saturday when Rezendes was spotted exiting the building and was found hiding in the trunk of a car containing LaChance, who was driving the vehicle, and passengers Black, Jones, and Mendes, according to police.
Police are continuing to look for the gun used in the incident. Rezendes and LaChance are next due in court on February 8. Black, Jones, and Mendes will appear before a judge again on February 15.
Rezendes was arrested in September on charges of carrying a firearm and possessing ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card. Police said at the time that they believed his .45 caliber handgun was used in the September 25 drive-by shooting on Cromesett Road. Rezendes was not charged in connection with that crime, however. No one was hurt during that incident.
LaChance was in court earlier this month on charges of obstruction of justice in relation to the January 8 stabbing at the White Pines Motel. LaChance allegedly drove Leonard Bolia and Ryan Aponte, both of Wareham, to the motel, where the two allegedly attempted to rob resident Richard Walling, who stabbed them. Bolia and Aponte later died. LaChance is accused of providing false statements about the incident to police. He pleaded not guilty to that charge in Wareham District Court on January 10.
