The Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks Veteran’s Committee has teamed up with Shirt Shack to help keep veterans cozy this winter. 

The committee will be donating 20 warm sweatshirts to veterans who live at the Kendrick House, Evergreen House and the Marc Rose House. The group will also be handing out snacks donated by Walmart and toiletries.

“There's a need all the time for vets,” said committee member Bob Powilatis. He noted that there are a number of veterans who are homeless, in transition or dealing with recovery from substance abuse. 

This year, the committee — Powilatis, Mike Ward, Maureen Crocker, and Bill Owen — is also focusing on bringing fun to the veterans. 

During the summer, the group hopes to provide the vets with fishing rods and lawn chairs. They’re also hoping to help the vets attend Gatemen games.
