Talented prospects to join Gatemen for 2016 season
The Wareham Gatemen will enter the 2016 season chasing a second consecutive playoff appearance with an almost entirely new team.
Each summer, college players from across the country join the Gatemen, a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The league includes 10 teams stretching from Wareham to the Outer Cape. Many Major League Baseball players spent time honing their careers in the league.
Gatemen General Manager Andrew Lang said only one player will return this year, instead of the usual four to five.
“We’ve got nearly a whole new roster going forward,” said Lang, adding that the pitching staff appears to be particularly strong.
Lang said the team wants to improve on last year when the Gatmen made the playoffs, albeit with an under .500 record.
“We want to make the playoffs and play better than .500 this season,” said Lang.
Position players Carl Chester, Colton Shaver and KJ Harrison should play a part in that success, Lang said.
“These are a few players I’m really looking forward to having them come up,” said Lang.
Shaver, a first basemen, looks to add some power to the offense having had 53 hits and nine home runs last year at Brigham Young University.
“He will be our designated hitter/first basemen,” said Lang. “His offensive stats are excellent.”
Shaver also netted 46 RBIs and 39 runs last year.
Centerfielder and Oregon State student KJ Harrison is another player fans should watch, according to Lang.
Last year, Harrison was called up to play across the world for Team U.S.A., an honor for only the best college players. At Oregon State, he had a total of 41 hits, 18 singles, 14 doubles, four triples and five home runs.
On the pitching staff, Lang said he was looking forward to having southpaw Robert Garcia take the mound.
Garcia, a student at the University of California, Davis, threw 52 strike outs last year and had a 1.86 ERA.
Joining him will be Nick Sprengel, a University of San Diego student and fellow left handed pitcher. Last year, Sprengel pitched 51 strike outs and had a 6.82 ERA.
Lang noted that the last time the Gatemen won the league championship was in 2012. Looking forward to this season, he said winning would be welcome, but the organization’s real focus is on the players.
“It’s a league you want to win,” said Lang. “You want to win the championship, but our main goal is to bring in players and send them back to their college a much better player.”
The Gatemen’s first regular season game is away on June 10 against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The first home game is June 12 at 5:30 p.m. against Cotuit. The Gatemen play at Spillane Field in Wareham, next to the middle school.
