Temporary shellfishing closure in Onset
Shellfishing is currently prohibited in some areas of Onset after a sewer main ruptured in the area of the Stone Bridge on Onset Avenue, according to the Harbormaster Department.
Although the spill was relatively small, as a precautionary measure, The Division of Marine Fisheries has requested a temporary closure for any and all shellfishing practices until further notice in the areas described below.
A closure line has been set from the Southeast corner of the Onset Pier to the mean low tide mark of Point Independence and all points north of the closure line which includes the following:
- Onset Beach, beach located on the east side of the Onset Pier extending to Stone Bridge
- East River, north and south of the Stone Bridge
- Broad Cove
- Muddy Cove
Water quality testing is currently being conducted by the Division of Marine Fisheries and Harbormaster Department. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
