There's more in store from the Onset Bay Association
At the end of a successful summer filled with music, movies and special events, the Onset Bay Association isn't hanging up its hat just yet: there's more in store for the year.
The biggest goal for the association, which it will work toward until next summer, is raising funds for the Fourth of July fireworks. The association currently has $7,000 of its $40,000 goal.
Members of the association met Thursday night to discuss future plans for fundraising and they came up with a challenge for local businesses.
Hoping to sustain a fireworks show for years to come instead of simply fulfilling one year's worth of fireworks at a time, the association is challenging local businesses and residents to pledge donation amounts every year. Be it $50 or $5,000, every donation helps.
"We got to do a lot of fundraising," said Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones. Thankfully, they've gotten "a lot of positive responses" from grassroots efforts with an average donation of $25 coming in from Wareham families.
On Oct. 6, the association will host a silent auction, live auction, gift raffle, and 50/50 raffle at MezzaLuna from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be hors d'oeuvres and the auction items include locally crafted items and gift certificates.
According to Jones, the auction has occurred for years and is always successful. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
She and the members are working on hosting a variety of other events for the remainder of the year.
October is already filled with events, beginning with the Scarecrow Festival on Oct. 17 where groups and individuals can build their own scarecrow and be a part of the festivities along Onset Avenue and Main Street until Halloween.
On Oct. 20, the association will host an open house. The public is invited to the office, located at 4 Union Ave. in Onset, to meet board members, talk to events committee heads and "find out who's who and what's what."
"Not many people know where we're located, but we've had a physical presence for 25, 30 years here," said Jones. She hopes to have more events in the office throughout the remainder of the year.
There will be a Halloween Family Fun Day on Oct. 29 which includes crafts, cookie decorating and parading through town in costumes.
Jones is organizing a Paint Nite event in the month of November as well as a book signing by Michael Maddigan, author of "Onset and Point Independence," on Nov. 10.
This Christmas season, the association is partnering with Turning Point and donating goods to its annual drive. The association hopes to start up the Junior Onset Bay Association at the same time to encourage children to get involved in helping with the community.
The nonprofit runs solely on donations and events are administered by volunteers. It has hosted the Summer of Love concert series during which free concerts were given at the Lillian Gregerman Band Shell on Wednesdays, the Onset Blues Festival, Illumination Night, the Chalk Festival, and movies on Thursdays, just to name a few events.
