Three seats available in Onset Fire District’s May election

Onset Fire District officials announced that nomination papers for three seats will be available starting on March 4. The district’s election is scheduled for May 21.

The Onset Fire District supplies water and fire protection to Onset while a separate Wareham Fire District performs the same function for the rest of the town.

Both districts are separate from the Town of Wareham and each Fire District is overseen by an elected three-member Prudential Committee. The districts set water rates and allocate funds for the Fire Departments.

There is one, three-year seat on the Prudential Committee and one, three-year seat on the Board of Water Commissioners. A one year seat as moderator will also be open.

Currently, Marcine Fernandes holds the Prudential Committee seat and Kenneth Fontes holds the Board of Water Commissioners seat. Robert Brousseau, a write in candidate, holds the moderator position.

Nomination papers will be available at the Onset Fire District Office, located at 15 Sand Pond Road.

The district’s annual meeting is scheduled for May 20 where voters will weigh the district’s budget, any potential spending requests from fire and water officials and other matters.

The deadline to submit items for that meeting’s agenda and to pull nomination papers is 5 p.m. on April 11.

Absentee ballots will be available on April 16. The last day for apply for an absentee ballot is May 20 by 12 p.m.
