TikTok trend prompts added security at schools Friday

Dec 16, 2021

The Wareham Public Schools posted a message on the district website on Thursday, Dec. 16, related to a national trend on video social media app TikTok related to a threat to school safety at schools nationwide on Friday, Dec. 17.

The district clarified that while there is no known connection to Wareham schools or students, the district is monitoring the situation and taking it seriously.

As an additional precaution, the district reached out to the Wareham Police Department, which will be providing extra security on Friday.

This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats,” the district wrote. “Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff.”

The district asks anyone who becomes aware of a potential threat to notify the police, a school staff member, or other trusted adult right away.
