Time to change your smoke alarm batteries!
Daylight Savings Time ends Nov. 4, and the Wareham Fire Department wants to remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms.
Although 92 percent of homes in the United States have smoke alarms, almost one third of those alarms don't work.
Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy, in addition to changing batteries, recommends that people test the buttons on the smoke alarm, have two ways out in case of a fire, and practice escape routes with the whole family.
"Working smoke alarms provide an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape," said McDuffy. "This is particularly important for those most at risk of dying in a home fire, such as children and seniors."
