Town Administrator to continue to have hiring authority

Oct 2, 2019

The Board of Selectmen voted to continue to delegate hiring authority for everything other than department heads on Tuesday night.

Department heads, including the Chief of Police or the Superintendent of the Wareham Public Schools are brought before the Board of Selectmen for approval, while

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan has the right to employ non-department heads, such as clerks or bookkeepers, without the Selectmen’s ratification.

“We have sort of given up our rights to hire everybody except the department heads and we allowed the Town administrator to do that on his own. I think it worked good. I don’t think we have had any problems with that at all,” said Selectman Patrick Tropeano.

“I don’t see why we need to see every single employee. Derek is the day-to-day person to take care of the town and I think that he should have that duty,” Tropeano continued.
