Town cashes in on kiosk program

Aug 7, 2014

The parking kiosks in Onset continue to exceed town officials' expectations, as the program pulled in more than $50,000 in the month of July.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said at a recent Selectman's meeting that through July 31, the program, which has kiosks at the Onset Pier, Shell Point, the Temple Lot (at the corner of C.W. Bishop Avenue and Union Avenue) and two on Onset Avenue, has brought in $79,665.

"We anticipate exceeding the $90,000 goal [by the end of the summer]," Sullivan said.

The revenue and number of transactions generated at each lot this summer is as follows:

  • Onset Pier, $53,473, with a total of 8,221 transactions at its two kiosks.
  • Temple lot, $11,826, with 2,786 transactions.
  • Shell Point, $7,013 with 2,053 transactions.
  • Two kiosks on Onset Avenue, $7,352 with 5,699 transactions.

Sullivan said the Onset Avenue kiosks are only $1-an-hour for a two-hour maximum, and seemed pleased with the numbers from those kiosks.

"When you look at the amount of parking spots on the pier compared to [Onset Avenue], you can tell there is a lot of flow in and out of those parking spots,” he said.

Sullivan said the money from kiosks could potentially be used for things such as fixing the Onset Pier, line-painting, signage and other uses in the area, including eventually expanding the kiosks into Wareham.

"It's just the start of the program," said Selectman Stephen Holmes at a meeting last month. "We're going to extend this from one end of the town line to the other."

Sullivan also spoke with Community and Economic Development Authority Director Sal Pina about using CEDA funds to "formalize" Hines Field lot.

“I don't mean paving. That's not going to happen,” Sullivan said. “But there are some things we can do to make that more attractive and formalize the parking.”
