Town to celebrate 275th anniversary in style

Jul 2, 2014

It’s been a long time coming, 275 years in fact, but the Wareham birthday celebration is finally here.

Marking the 275th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Wareham, the events from Thursday, July 10 through Sunday, July 13 are the grand finale for the Summer of Celebration.

“It should be a fun few days for Wareham families,” said Rudy Santos, head of the Summer of Celebration committee. “We want this to represent the people of the town.”

The event weekend kicks off on July 10, the exact day the town was incorporated in 1739. In the morning there will be a flag raising ceremony on the Onset Bluffs at 8 a.m. followed by an 18th century church service at the First Congregational Church of Wareham at noon.

A reenactment of the incorporation of the town, complete with a man riding in on a horse will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Town Hall.

After the reenactment the action moves to the High School athletic field for the town’s birthday party, taking place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The party will feature a wide variety of live music, from Grace Morrison and R.S.O., to a Motown revue by Buddy and Friends featuring Daniel “Buddy” Monteiro. Entertainment will also be provided by Aisling Peartree, the New Bedford Sea Chantey Chorus, and the G-20 Chorus. Dancers from the Lukumi Afro-Cuban Dancers, Kaleidoscope Dance Group and Haley Irish Step Dancers will be there as well as balloons, face painting and birthday cake with ice cream to add to the celebration.

“It’s a full day and a full evening of entertainment,” Santos said.

Starting off the events on Saturday will be the Incorporation Parade.

“We spent the year trying to get as many marching bands and people in the parade as possible,” said Rudy Santos, the head of the Summer of Celebration committee. He said the parade will include everything from scottish pipe bands, floats to militia reenactors and Clydesdale horses. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and follows the route from Main Street to Gibbs Avenue, to Marion Road, ending at Wareham Town Hall.

On Saturday evening the party moves to A.D. Makepeace Company Box Mill, 158 Tihonet Road at 7 p.m. for the Founders Ball where signature foods will be provided by local restaurants along with a cash bar. Dance to Positivity, featuring Daniel “Buddy” Monteiro will be providing the entertainment.

Tickets for this semi-formal or period dress ball are $30 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets for tables of 10 are $250. Tickets are available from Claire Smith at 508-4679 or Bob Blair at 508-748-6671.

Finally, rounding out the events on Sunday is Public Safety Day from 1 to 5 p.m. at Town Hall and the Wareham Middle School and High School.

The Wareham and Onset Fire Departments, Wareham EMS and Harbormaster Departments, and the Wareham Police Department will be on hand with other state, local, regional and military units to display and demonstrate equipment and skills.

Santos said aside from the Founders Ball, all of the weekend festivities are free.

“If you want to have a good time and listen to good music, come out and enjoy the party,” he said.
