The town-owned section of Bay Pointe not included in auction sale
The town-owned section of Bay Pointe Country Club will not be included in the sale when the property is auctioned later this month, according to the Office of Assessors.
The Onset icon is on the auction block after being foreclosed on. The 138-acre property, located at 19 Bay Pointe Drive off of Onset Avenue, offers 19 holes and two clubhouses.
The Community and Economic Development Authority (CEDA) owns approximately 7.5 acres of that land, where an office and club house is located. According to Barbara Lefavor in the Office of Assessors, that land is not being foreclosed on and will not be included in the sale.
The Community and Economic Development Authority began leasing the land to the club in 1993, Lefavor said.
Built in the 1960s, the club has faced financial challenges in the past. Tom Tobey, Head Golf Professional at Bay Pointe, said the property has gone into bankruptcy several times, most recently in 2006.
In the fall of 2009 the club worked with the Planning Board to amend a zoning bylaw to allow for special permitting for club renovations. The plans included tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and a function facility large enough to accommodate wedding receptions, parties, and other special events. The plan also included the development of residential space. The bylaw change was passed, however the plans for the additional amenities were put on hold.
In March 2010, the renewal of the seasonal liquor license for The Pavilion at Bay Pointe Country Club was uncertain because Bay Pointe owed payments on land leased from the Community and Economic Development Authority. Bay Pointe later reached a payment agreement with the department to continue its operation.
“It is premature to say if the land will be leased to the new owner of the property [after the auction],” said Acting Director of the Community and Economic Development Authority Peter Sanborn. "Their lender is foreclosing on the property. It is unclear if the company or the owner is bankrupt."
Town Administrator Mark Andrews said the town is taking the necessary steps to protect its property.
Tobey said he had only recently learned the property was up for auction and was not sure about the circumstances surrounding the auction or its possible impact on current club members.
Bay Pointe owner Mark Gibson declined to comment.
“It’s too early for me to talk about it," Gibson said of the club's future. “I have a bunch of negations going on.”
A public auction is scheduled for June 22 at 11 a.m., according to the website of Holbrook-based auctioneer and appraiser company Paul E. Saperstein Co. Inc., which will oversee the bidding.
