Town planner hired
John Charbonneau, who has worked as a planner in Framingham and has experience as a transportation planner for the Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District (SRPEDD), has been named to a part-time position as Wareham Town Planner.
"The planning staff is ecstatic to have a fellow of his caliber," Town Administrator Mark Andrews said at Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting.
In addition to his previous planning experience, "I've also worked on both sides of the table, presenting to boards and committees ... and also staffing boards and committees, so I think that's been invaluable experience," Charbonneau said.
Charbonneau is a shared planner with the Town of Rochester. He will work three days per week in Wareham, Andrews said.
"I think that's an excellent idea in order to save the taxpayers money and be frugal, as you have been in the past with some of the other positions," said Selectmen Chair Jane Donahue.
Charbonneau was unanimously chosen by a search committee, Andrews said. He has a bachelor's degree from Clark University and a master's degree in Urban Regional Planning from East Tennessee State University.
In other personnel updates, Andrews announced that Director of Assessment Richard Gonsalves will be taking a position elsewhere. Andrews said he plans to put Assistant Assessor Sheila Scaduto in place as Acting Director of Assessment beginning on August 2.
The Board of Selectmen also discussed whether to limit the number of boards and committees for which residents can volunteer. Selectmen heard from several residents during the "citizens participation" portion of the meeting who were against imposing limitations. Ultimately, Selectmen decided to hold a workshop to review the entire committee appointment process.
