Town program offers work-based tax break for seniors

Jan 21, 2025

Wareham senior residents who are accepted to a town program may receive up to $1,000 off their property tax bill in exchange for work.

The Select Board made their annual approval of the annual Senior Tax Work-Off Program on Jan. 21. The program enables eligible senior residents to work for the town for a short time in exchange for a property tax abatement.

Wareham residents who will be 60-years-old by July 1, 2025 have the ability to apply in-person at the Council on Aging office and Select Board’s office or online.

Accepted applicants can work for the town up to 65 hours over the course of a year in exchange for $1,000 at a rate of $15 an hour.

Select Board Chair Judith Whiteside clarified that the work is not manual labor, but instead usually consists of office work, such as filing and organizing.

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time Wareham residents and make no more than $45,000 a year for an individual and $50,000 for a two person household.
