Toy chopper catches fire, makes a scene in Wareham marsh
When emergency responders heard over the radio that a helicopter had crashed and burst into flames in a marsh on Apple Street, Wareham Fire and Wareham Emergency Medical Services were ready to douse flames and save lives.
What they found was a burn mark on the grass. The crash was real, the helicopter was not.
"We were under the impression that it was a full-size helicopter crash," said Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy. Instead, it was a remote-controlled toy copter.
McDuffy said the fire department considered the call a "good intent call." While it sounds like a prank a teenager might pull, the call was made in good faith.
However, the nature and severity of the situation was clearly lost in translation.
Wareham Fire is calling in an investigator to see if there are recalls on the toy, which was purchased just the day before the crash landing.
John Lopes of Apple Street said his niece was flying the helicopter from the back porch when he heard her yelling, "get water, get water!"
"I handed her the buckets and she put it out," said Lopes. "When it landed is what made it catch on fire."
Lopes said he had warned his niece about flying the toy chopper on such a windy day.
"I told her, 'don't take it out on the grass,' Lopes explained, "and the wind took it right out to the marsh."
