Turning Point receives boost for the holidays

Turning Point has received another donation, just in time for the holidays.

The Point Independence Yacht Club, of Onset, donated $1,500 from its annual Grand Slam Fishing Tournament to Turning Point again this year.

Eastern Bank Vice President Rose Berry also sits on the Board of Directors at Turning Point, a local nonprofit organization that helps the homeless. She said when Point Independence Yacht Club Chairman Chuck Hurley came to her several years ago and asked if she knew who could use the money, her answer was “of course – Turning Point.”

“If we can’t help the homeless, who can we help?” Berry said. “No better organization than Turning Point.”

Though the donation was larger last year, Turning Point Chairman Pastor David Shaw said the money is a great boost to the organization’s efforts, and will help to pay rent for a few people to find apartments or rooms.

“This is the year we are going to make progress on actually getting people into housing,” Shaw said.

Shaw said he suspects there are several rental properties available, but that the “stigma attached to homeless people” prevents them from being rented out to the homeless.

“Sometimes people are a little leary, but we’ve had four units in Onset that have had people housed for the last several years – good tenants,” Shaw said.
