Two rescued after small boat capsizes in Onset

Oct 6, 2011

The Onset Fire Department rescued two people from the chilly water of Onset Bay just after 4:30 p.m. on Monday after the skiff the victims were traveling in capsized.

The department responded to the scene after it was reported that people were yelling for help.

Firefighters commandeered the Fleet King fishing boat which was pulling into the pier at the time of the incident and rescued one of the victims, said Onset Fire Captain Raymond Goodwin. The second victim swam to a nearby boat.

Wareham EMS treated the victims for exposure to the cold water. One was transported to Tobey Hospital, officials said.

It is unclear what caused the boat to capsize.

The Harbormaster Department and Wareham Police also responded to the scene.
