Two Wareham men were arrested after an altercation involving a machete occurred on Onset Avenue Friday afternoon, according to Wareham Police.

22-year-old Kohlbey Hammond of Onset and 20-year-old Aurthor Mpofu of West Wareham were arrested after Wareham police officers were called for a disturbance involving several males fighting, one of which reportedly brandished a machete, at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Hammond explained to officers that his vehicle was struck by a rock on Onset Avenue in the area of the Point Independence Bridge, at which time he pulled over to confront a man he believed threw the rock.

Mpofu, who was Hammond’s passenger, said he pulled out a machete from the vehicle to defend himself during the altercation, according to officers.

The victim said that he did not know either Hammond or Mpofu, and that both of them chased him and a friend while swinging the machete, according to officials. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

According to reports, the men were stopped in a blue Chrysler Sebring by officer Paul Somers one mile away in the area of the 99 Restaurant on Cranberry Highway. During the investigation of the incident, a black machete was found under clothes in the rear seat of the vehicle driven Hammond.

Mpofu and Hammond were placed under arrest and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Both are being held at the Wareham Police Department pending bail and will be arraigned at the Wareham 4th District Court on Monday, Aug. 4.
