Updated June 24: Credit Union only bidder on Bay Pointe Country Club

Jun 24, 2011

More than two dozen people attended the auction of iconic Onset golf course Bay Pointe Country Club on Wednesday, June 22. The auction, held in the parking lot of the pavilion, ended with the property's mortgage holder, Digital Federal Credit Union, posting the only bids.

In a statement released Friday the company said the business would remain open and operate as usual.

"It’s business as usual until a new buyer is found for Bay Pointe Country Club. The only thing that has changed is ownership of the property," according to the statement. "Digital Federal Credit Union is committed to keeping the course open, keeping the staff that is presently employed, honoring all existing memberships, and maintaining the property as a first-class golf course and banquet facility."

Digital Federal Credit Union has hired a management company to assist in day-to-day operations and will be honoring all events booked prior to the auction.

Digital Federal Credit Union "will have the staff and management company work with those individuals to ensure that they have a first-class experience at the facility. That includes providing catering and liquor service," according to the statement.

The club was put on the auction block after being foreclosed on. The 138-acre property, located at 19 Bay Pointe Drive off of Onset Avenue, features 19 holes and two clubhouses.

There were four separate auctions held on the property. The first on the lease holder mortgage on the town-owned portion of the land, a second on the remaining land including the newly renovated pavilion, a third for the liquor license, and a fourth for the furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

The town Community and Economic Development Authority (CEDA) owns approximately 7.5 acres of the land, where an office and clubhouse is located.

Digital Federal Credit Union began the bidding at $100,000, then raised its bid to $200,000. The purchase effectively transferred the long-term lease of the town land from former Bay Pointe Owner Mark Gibson to Digital Federal Credit Union.

The remaining property was sold to the credit union for $1.5 million. The company also bought the liquor license and the furnishings for $5,000 a piece.
