UPDATED: Pay-to-park kiosks installed in two Onset lots, town plans to expand program
If you want to park on the Town Pier or in the Union Avenue lot adjacent to the tennis courts in Onset Village, you'll now have to pay a kiosk.
Previously, attendants manned the Town Pier lot and collected parking fees. There was formerly no charge to park in the Union Avenue lot.
The hourly rate for the two locations is $2.50 for the first hour and $2 for each subsequent hour. Each kiosk accepts debit cards, credit cards, and coins. Kiosks do not accept bills.
Once parking is paid, the kiosk will issue a printed receipt, which must be displayed on the vehicle's dashboard in plain view.
The kiosks were purchased with approximately $23,000 of Community Events Committee money, which was generated from parking fees and a portion of the town's hotel/motel tax. There are two on the pier and one in the center of the Union Avenue lot.
Sullivan says the town plans to expand the parking program with the monies generated by the kiosks.
"We're going to keep building it," Sullivan said, but noted: "We need to make sure that it's equitable for the residents and the business owners."
A study currently being conducted by the Community and Economic Development Authority will help the town determine what the village needs in terms of parking and will ultimately effect how the town moves forward with any additional kiosks, Sullivan said.
Parking enforcement officers will use the displayed receipt from the kiosk to determine if the vehicle is lawfully parked. Vehicles without a receipt displayed or with an expired receipt will be subject to parking enforcement.
Officers were lenient for the first weekend the machines were installed, but Town Administrator Derek Sullivan says the town will be "ramping up enforcement."
"We've put in more parking officers for enforcement," he said. "They're already [town] employees, but now they have the ability to write tickets."
