The Onset-Wareham fireworks display went off without a hitch on Sunday after the threat of thunderstorms postponed the annual event on Saturday.

A crew from New Hampshire's Atlas PyroVision Productions fired 1,100 shells into the air for the display, which occurred in near-perfect weather. (Some attendees said they could have done without the muggy heat!)

The gentle, 2 mph breeze moved the smoke promptly, explained Kelly Magni of Atlas, which provided clear views for the many gathered on Onset Beach, the Bluffs, and the parks.

It took crews approximately six hours to prepare for the 25-minute display. Magni joked before the show: “We promise to be longer than San Diego,” referring to an Independence Day mishap in which a fireworks company accidentally lit the entire display all at once – resulting in a 15-second blast instead of a 20-minute show.

The Onset-Wareham Fireworks Committee, made up of a team of community volunteers, raised the approximately $20,000 needed to put on the show.

Safety crews were disbursed throughout Onset to keep an eye out for any fires caused by the fireworks.

“This is a very well planned out, a very well-choreographed event,” said Onset Fire Captain Raymond Goodwin.

In addition to Onset Fire, the Wareham, Marion, and Mattapoisett fire departments and state Department of Conservation, Fire Control contributed manpower, boats, and other equipment.
