Vikings baseball turns a corner
Vikings baseball is back on track, with a close, tense victory against Old Rochester on Friday and a blowout of Case on Monday.
We've won two in a row, and we're starting to turn a corner," said Coach David Harrison on Monday after the game.
Sophomore Tyler Horton started on the mound in his first varsity game on Friday, going seven innings in which he gave up only six hits and struck out four.
Although Wareham was ahead through the majority of the game, ORR threatened in the top of the seventh by rallying to tie the game at 2-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Wareham didn't give up, however. Matt Bennet singled, Ian Searles walked, and then Mike Sullivan singled to load the bases. Senior Calvin Scannel came to the plate a knocked in the winning run.
"It was a good win," said Harrison. "It gave the kids a lot of confidence."
The team returned on Monday to blow away Case 10-0. Senior Mike Sullivan pitched a complete game, surrendering only three hits while striking out eight.
"He pitched a great game," said Harrison.
He was equally impressive at the plate, with two hits and two walks leading to four runs scored. Calvin Scannell, however, led the offensive charge with four RBIs courtesy of a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly. Other standout players included sophomores Billy Peterson with two hits and three RBIs and Sean Conway, who contributed a two-run homer. Another sophomore, Chuck Rohrbach, had two hits in his first varsity game.
"Hopefully, we're starting on a roll here," said Harrison.
