Vikings boys indoor track overcomes season hurdles
Lacing up for a season full of meets, the Wareham High School boys indoor track team looks to make improvements and ready the runners to face opposing schools.
The team is coming off of a one win four loss 2024 to 2025 season.
The team's season kicked off from the starting lines at Wheaton College Wednesday, Dec. 17 against the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. As of Friday, Dec. 9 the team has not seen any wins.
Head Coach Chris Gardner said the team is larger than in past years. With most of the students participating in other sports, he said finding their footing in track has proven to be a challenge.
"I mean, nobody grows up playing track and field," Gardner said. "People grow up being athletic. I'm teaching them things they've never done before. They're very good athletes in other sports but this is brand new so it's frustrating to them."
As the boys practiced, Gardner said his hopes for winning any meets this season isn't high. Despite the expectations, a few of the runners have already qualified for the divisional meet.
"Something we've always had on our teams is that if we took our 10 to 15 best boys, we'd probably beat most of the other teams best boys," he said.
However the scores level out though, the experience out on the track has proven to bring the group together. Gardner commended their relationships with each other, noting how comfortable the boys were as jokes were thrown around on the field between the athletes.
"Their energy is good," he said. "Their energy and their willingness to learn— they're all really eager."
Practicing baton passes and readying themselves for their next meet, the boys will face off against Bishop Feehan High School at Wheaton College Wednesday, Jan. 14.
